The Cyfarthfa Foundation

The Cyfarthfa Foundation is a charity championing the long-term development of Cyfarthfa Castle and Park at Merthyr Tydfil into a heritage attraction of national significance.

In 2020 ‘The Cyfarthfa Plan’ presented a high-level strategic vision for the Castle and an enlarged Cyfarthfa Park. The Foundation has been established to progress the project and is working to turn the vision into a realistic and fundable scheme.

The Cyfarthfa Plan is a long-term strategic vision that will not only reveal the global importance of Merthyr Tydfil’s industrial past but also work in harmony with nature to transform the Cyfarthfa area.

The Cyfarthfa Foundation is a registered charity that has been awarded a grant of £1.2m by the Welsh Government to get the detailed planning under way and to generate the necessary funds to support the substantial work. While the Foundation focuses on project planning, Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council will continue to manage Cyfarthfa Park and Castle. There is a lot of planning to be done, and money to be raised. This will take several years.

The current pre-development phase involves creating staged plans and an associated business case so that necessary funds can be raised to redevelop the castle into a bold national attraction and an asset for the local community and beyond.
