Ironmasters & Ironworkers: Life in a Victorian Town

During this interactive, taught costume based session, pupils will uncover the differences in life between the Crawshay Ironmasters and some of the most predominant ironworkers. Pupils will also have the opportunity to visit Joseph Parry’s Cottage to discover how everyday life has changed over the last 200 years, OR, choose to learn more about Victorian childhood and create a traditional Victorian toy to take home. 

During your self-led hour, pupils can take part in a gallery trail centred on the Merthyr Rising.

Art in a box: Cyfarthfa’s Curators

Art in a box teaches pupils how to begin to interpret pieces of both contemporary and historic art works. As part of the session, pupils will curate, frame and write interpretation labels for their own art exhibition. The session considers key Welsh artists including Penry Williams and Kyffin Williams.  After lunch, pupils can create their own piece of art that links with their current scheme of work.

Egyptomania

Discover the ancient ritual of mummification through this interactive hands on workshop. Learn about how Cyfarthfa came to be home to a large Ancient Egyptian collection and how the artefacts are important in day to day Egyptian life.

Merthyr's Black Gold

Uncover the importance of Black gold in Merthyr and Wales in this object investigation based session. Pupils will use their skills as historians to investigate the use of various mining artefacts. To finish the session pupils will look at artist Nick Evans, and create a piece of coal mining themed work in response.

Capturing the Crawshays: Castles V Home

This half day, outdoors based activity focuses on Robert Thompson Crawshay’s photography collection, with the opportunity to utilise critical thinking skills to recreate iconic photographs from the castles’ history. Pupils will then carry out a craft based activity of creating their own cyanotype.

Evacuated: World War Two

In this World War Two session, pupils will become history detectives to uncover various different “iconic” items that were an essential part of everyday life during World War II. Pupils will then discover the journey that evacuees took to get to Merthyr Tydfil during the war, and the memories of those children. To finish, pupils will put their knowledge into practice through problem based craft activities.
